Pakistani PM vows sustained action to eradicate polio

ISLAMABAD, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday pledged continued efforts, with international support, to eradicate polio from the country.

Sharif made the remarks during a meeting with a high-level delegation of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation at the Prime Minister's Office, an official statement said.

He said Pakistan would continue implementing a comprehensive anti-polio strategy in coordination with provincial governments to ensure nationwide access for vaccination teams, adding that relevant Public Sector Development Program projects would be sustained.

Despite significant progress, further urgent measures were still needed to eliminate the disease, he said.

The prime minister thanked the Gates Foundation and Muslim brotherly countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, for their support.
