From December 2 to 13, the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is being held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. China is one of the leading countries in the world in combating desertification. In the field of desert management, there is a pioneer named Shi Guangyin. As a child, he witnessed the desert engulfing his village, and since then, he has vowed to protect his home and fight desertification. Since 1984, he has led a team to plant drought-resistant trees, which have gradually restored large green Spaces after many difficulties. So far, he has led people to plant more than 53 million trees and green 250,000 acres of land. His son and grandson carried on the cause and continued to fight for desert governance. The story of Shi Guangyin is not only a legend of one person, but also a persistence and hope passed down from generation to generation.

What you see here today, the lush greenery, stands in stark contrast to the pastit was once a place where nothing could grow. This is the Mu Us Sandy Land, located in Shaanxi Province, known by its Mongolian name, meaning "bad water." It buried more than 400 villages under the fury of sandstorms, causing Yulin City, situated on the deserts edge, to be relocated four times.Yet, amidst this overwhelming challenge, one man decided to take action. This is the story of Shi Guangyina tale of perseverance, hope, and the land he calls home.

Started in 1984, with limited funds, Shi sold livestock and borrowed money to buy saplings.

Leading a group of villagers, he organized large-scale tree planting efforts. However, strong winds soon devastated much of their hard work.

Discouraged, many villagers lost hope, but Shi remained resolute.Shi sought advice from forestry experts and learned advanced techniques for controlling desertificaiton.By the Spring of 1988, his methods worked, and 80% of the trees to survived. Shi has remained steadfast in his fight ever since, never leaving the front lines. He has since continued his mission, tirelessly working toward desert reclamation to this day.

For Shi, its not just about surviving. Its about the future. And so, his legacy continues. His son, his grandson has picked up the mantle, carrying forward the fight with a dedication as fierce as his own. Over the years, Shi has led his community in planting over 53 million trees, transforming 250,000 mu(17,000 hectares) of land into green.

Shi Guangyin's story is not just his own. Across China, countless others, driven by the same quiet determination, have risen to the challenge.

For them, the battle is far from over.
