ZAMBOANGA CITY, Oct 12 (PIA) - A significant percentage of Filipinos want to leave their homes within the next five years and relocate to either another country or another region in the Philippines, a recent survey revealed.
Top intended international destinations are the United States of America, Canada, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, as per results from the 2018 National Migration Survey. Top Philippines internal migration destinations include CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), NCR (National Capital Region), SOCCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City) and Central Visayas.
According to Conrad Sontillano, Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) 9 Statistical Operations chief, the survey found out that 14 percent of Filipinos have intentions to migrate to the said countries, or to leave their homes to relocate to other cities or municipalities in the Philippines.
The survey revealed that employment opportunities are the top motivator for migrants.
Top countries where Filipinos have already migrated to are Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Japan, Kuwait, Qatar, Malaysia, USA and Taiwan.
The 2018 National Migration Survey (NMS) is the first nationwide survey on migration in the Philippines, jointly implemented by the PSA and the University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI). The NMS aims to provide information on the mobility of Philippine population in order to assist policy makers and program managers in designing and evaluating strategies for improving services and assistance to Filipinos going abroad or moving within the country.
